Paper in the History of Psychology

This project originated as an experiment that began in 2002. I noticed many years ago that bartenders and restaurant staff would always hesitate when entering an item in to a PoS Terminal. Somewhere in the process they would always have a hard time finding the correct button to touch.

When I was an electrical engineer in the 1980's I became familiar with a psychological study that discussed the limits of our ability to process information. At the time I was working on the design of a 5000 line telephone system. Back then there was no such thing as 10 digit local telephone numbers. If you made a local call it was always seven digits. I was told this study is the reason telephone numbers are seven digits.

The title of the research paper is "The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two: Some Limits on our Capacity for Processing Information"

When a research paper is written the author is required to cite their sources of information. The number of times a paper is cited in other papers is a metric parameter that is used as an indicator of the paper's quality and popularity. This paper I refer to created in 1955 (then published in 1956), is the most cited research paper in the history of psychology. In other words it is considered a very credible source of very valid information.

My theory then was the PoS windows had too much "information". Mostly too many buttons. But some take it further, by adding pictures on the buttons, and lots of colors, too many distractions, just too much stuff, and most importantly, too many choices.

This is a summary remark made at the end of the paper:

"By organizing the stimulus input simultaneously into several dimensions and successively into a sequence of chunks, we manage to break (or at least stretch) this informational bottleneck. "

It's not important to fully understand this statement. What is important, I incorporated this in to the software and in my opinion as well as many users, it has been a tremendous success.

What about Service? Sam Kontar of Busters Pizza, in Edmonton AB, called us at 5:26PM and expressed a desire for a second kitchen printer. Exactly at 7:00PM that day, 94 minutes later, Sam was sent an e-mail with a link to an Update of the Delivery Software supporting an additional kitchen printer.

What about Support Costs? We've been giving away free software for over 15 years. Our business model has been give away the software and sell the caller id unit.
